Periwinkle (Gastropoda: Littorinidae) habitat selection and its impact upon microalgal populations BJB
APOLINÁRIO,M.; COUTINHO,R.; BAETA-NEVES,M. H..
The present study examines habitat selection and grazing pressure of the periwinkle Nodilittorina lineolata (Gmelin, 1791) on the rocky shore of Arraial do Cabo, RJ, Brazil (lat. 23°S, long. 43°W). Transfer experiments suggest that periwinkles actively select the mid intertidal, where the cirripede Chthamalus bisinuatus Pilsbry is the dominant sessile invertebrate. We also conducted a caging experiment in the middle intertidal, manipulating grazers and light, to assess the impact of grazing upon microalgal density. Grazing pressure significantly reduced microalgal abundance at the mid-intertidal level, suggesting that food availability plays an important role in the habitat selection of periwinkles on the studied shore.

Influence of nutrients on biomass and oil yield from microalgae Chlorella vulgaris for biodiesel production Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Araujo,Glacio Souza; Lopes,Dilliani Naiane Mascena; Santiago,Clarice da Silva; Silva,José William Alves da; Fernandes,Fabiano André Narciso.
ABSTRACT Microalgae are commonly used in aquiculture as feed for postlarval mollusks, fish and crustaceans because they are easy to grow, small in size, grow rapidly and have high levels of fatty acids. These microorganisms also accumulate high amounts of oil, which can be extracted and converted into biodiesel using chemical processes. In this work, freshwater microalgae Chlorella vulgaris was grown in the Live Food Production Laboratory (LABPAV/IFCE Aracati Campus), with urea (stock solution 1), triple superphosphate (stock solution 2) and vitamins (stock solution 3), in growth medium, in triplicate, using three different quantities of stock solutions 1 and 2, but with a constant amount of vitamins. The quantities of 0.5, 1 and 2 mL (T0.5, T1 and T2,...

Digestibility and pricing of Chlorella sorokiniana meal for use in tilapia feeds Scientia Agricola
Barone,Rafael Simões Coelho; Sonoda,Daniel Yokoyama; Lorenz,Evandro Kleber; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
ABSTRACT: Several microalgae contain in excess of 50 % crude protein with amino acid profile comparable to that of fish meal. In addition, high polyunsaturated fatty acid contents encourage their use in animal feeding and nutrition, particularly in the formulation and processing of aquafeeds. This study aims at estimating the feasibility of Chlorella meal as feed ingredient for the feeding and nutrition of farmed tilapia based upon digestibility data. Juvenile tilapia were stocked in conical-bottomed tanks (200 L) with superficial, continuous water flow, and fed to apparent satiation in three daily meals with a reference diet and a test diet containing 30 % lyophilized Chlorella sorokiniana added of an inert marker. Feces were collected overnight by...

Separation efficiency of a vacuum gas lift for microalgae harvesting ArchiMer
Barrut, Bertrand; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Muller-feuga, Arnaud; Rene, Francois; Narvaez, Cesar; Champagne, Jean-yves; Grasmick, Alain.
Low-energy and low-cost separation of microalgae from water is important to the economics of microalgae harvesting and processing. Flotation under vacuum using a vacuum gas lift for microalgae harvesting was investigated for different airflow rates, bubble sizes, salinities and harvest volumes. Harvesting efficiency (HE) and concentration factor (CF) of the vacuum gas lift increased by around 50% when the airflow rate was reduced from 20 to 10 L min(-1). Reduced bubble size multiplied HE and CF 10 times when specific microbubble diffusers were used or when the salinity of the water was increased from 0 parts per thousand to 40 parts per thousand. The reduction in harvest volume from 100 to 1 L increased the CF from 10 to 130. An optimized vacuum gas lift...

The glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa (Cp) was chemically investigated to identify pigments efficiently inhibiting malignant melanoma, mammary carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma cells growth. Cp water and ethanol extracts significantly inhibited the growth of the three cancer cell lines in vitro, at 100 mu g.mL(-1). Flash chromatography of the Cp ethanol extract, devoid of c-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin, enabled the collection of eight fractions, four of which strongly inhibited cancer cells growth at 100 mu g.mL(-1). Particularly, two fractions inhibited more than 90% of the melanoma cells growth, one inducing apoptosis in the three cancer cells lines. The detailed analysis of Cp pigment composition resulted in the discrimination of 17 molecules, ten of...

Draft genomes and phenotypic characterization of Tisochrysis lutea strains. Toward the production of domesticated strains with high added value ArchiMer
Carrier, Gregory; Baroukh, Caroline; Rouxel, Catherine; Duboscq-bidot, Laetitia; Schreiber, Nathalie; Bougaran, Gael.
Tisochrysis lutea is a microalga species currently used in aquaculture as a feed for shellfish, oysters and shrimps. It also has many other potential industrial applications, such as the production of neutral lipids for biofuels or the production of ω-3 fatty acids for nutraceuticals (human food complements). To efficiently exploit the potential of this microalga, however, higher lipid productivities are needed. To this end, improvement programs need to be developed and optimized. The diversity of strains available in microalgae has not yet been exploited in such improvement programs. In this study, the intra-strain diversity was observed and exploited to increase neutral lipid productivity. New clonal strains with higher neutral lipid productivity were...

Uptake of cadmium by Pseudokirchneriella supcapitata BABT
Casiraghi,Magela Paula; Luporini,Samuel; Silva,Eduardo Mendes da.
In this work the microalgae Pseudokirchneriella supcapitata was used for the removal of the cadmium in liquids. The accumulations of metal ions by the alga occur in two stages: a very fast absorption (passive adsorption) proceeded by a slower absorption (activate absorption). A mathematical model based on the surface absorption and on the transport into the interior of the cellular membrane was developed. The simulation model kinetic parameters were experimentally obtained. Through the results observed, the mathematical model was shown to be suitable when compared to the experimental results, confirming the validation of the mathematical model.

Harvesting Microalgal Biomass grown in Anaerobic Sewage Treatment Effluent by the Coagulation-Flocculation Method: Effect of pH BABT
Cassini,Servio Tulio; Francisco,Sara Aparecida; Antunes,Paulo Wagner Pereira; Oss,Rodrigo Nunes; Keller,Regina.
ABSTRACT Harvesting is a critical step in microalgal biomass production process for many reasons. Among the existing techniques available for harvesting and dewatering microalgal biomass, recovery from aqueous medium by coagulation-flocculation has been the most economically viable process, althoughit is highly dependent on pH. This study aims to assess alternative coagulants compared to the standard coagulant aluminum sulfate for microalgal biomass recovery from anaerobic effluent of domestic sewage treatment. The effluent quality was also analyzed after biomass recovery. Coagulants represented by modified tannin, cationic starch and aluminum sulfate recovered more than 90% of algae biomass, at concentrations greater than 80 mg/L, in the pH range 7-10....

Characterization of phototrophic microorganisms and description of new cyanobacteria isolated from the saline-alkaline crater-lake Dziani Dzaha (Mayotte, Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Cellamare, M.; Duval, C.; Drelin, Y.; Djediat, C.; Touibi, N.; Agogue, H.; Leboulanger, C.; Ader, M.; Bernard, C.
The saline-alkaline crater-lake Dziani Dzaha (Mayotte, Indian Ocean) is dominated by the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Arthrospira. However, the rest of the phototrophic community remains underexplored because of their minute dimension or lower biomass. To characterize the phototrophic microorganisms living in this ecosystem considered as a modern analog of Precambrian environments, several strains were isolated from the water column and stromatolites, and analyzed using the polyphasic approach. Based on morphological, ultrastructural and molecular (16S rRNA gene, 18S rRNA gene, 16S-23S ITS region, cpcBA-IGS locus) methods, seven filamentous cyanobacteria and the prasinophyte Picocystis salinarum were identified. Two new genera and four new cyanobacteria...

Effect of indigo dye effluent on the growth, biomass production and phenotypic plasticity of Scenedesmus quadricauda(Chlorococcales) Anais da ABC (AABC)
CHIA,MATHIAS A.; MUSA,RILWAN I..
The effect of indigo dye effluent on the freshwater microalgaScenedesmus quadricauda ABU12 was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. The microalga was exposed to different concentrations of the effluent obtained by diluting the dye effluent from 100 to 175 times in bold basal medium (BBM). The growth rate of the microalga decreased as indigo dye effluent concentration increased (p <0.05). The EC50 was found to be 166 dilution factor of the effluent. Chlorophyll a, cell density and dry weight production as biomarkers were negatively affected by high indigo dye effluent concentration, their levels were higher at low effluent concentrations (p <0.05). Changes in coenobia size significantly correlated with the dye effluent concentration. A...

Algicidal effects of aqueous leaf extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica) on Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) de Brébission Acta Botanica
Chia,Mathias Ahii; Akinsanmi,Jamiu Taiwo; Tanimu,Yahuza; Ladan,Zakari.
The application of synthetic algaecides for the control of algae produces by-products that are sometimes toxic to the environment. There is a need for natural and cheap alternatives to synthetic algaecides. In the present study, we investigated the potential of aqueous crude extract of Azadirachta indica to inhibit the growth of Scenedesmus quadricauda. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of groups of bioactive compounds that are capable of inhibiting microalgal growth. Chlorophyll a concentration, dry weight production and cell density of microalga decreased with increasing crude extract concentration. After three days of exposure, the 1000 mg/L extract concentration resulted in complete growth inhibition and cell lysis....

Microalgae: Cultivation Aspects and Bioactive Compounds BABT
Coêlho,Diego de Freitas; Tundisi,Louise Lacalendola; Cerqueira,Keilla Santos; Rodrigues,Jacqueline Rego da Silva; Mazzola,Priscila Gava; Tambourgi,Elias Basile; Souza,Roberto Rodrigues de.
Abstract Microalgae are aquatic unicellular microorganisms that can be found both in freshwater and marine systems; are capable of photosynthesis; and can grow as individual cells or associated in chains or small colonies. Microalgae cultivation has gained large momentum among researchers in the past decades due to their ability to produce value metabolites, remarkable photosynthetic efficiency, and versatile nature. The wide technological potential, and thus increasing amount of scattered knowledge, may become the very first barrier that a post graduating student, or any non-specialist reader, will face when introduced to the subject. In this review paper, we access the core aspects of microalgae technology, covering their main characteristics, and...

Does bivalve mucus favour the growth of their main food source, microalgae? ArchiMer
Cognie, B; Barille, Laurent.
Bivalves, by releasing inorganic nutrients, can stimulate the growth of the primary producers on which they feed. Dissolved excretion and mineralization of biodeposits (pseudofaeces and faeces), two indirect processes related to their feeding activity, have already been identified. This study investigated whether microalgal growth is also dependent on the mucus secreted by bivalves and rejected with their biodeposits. An experimental study based on algal growth tests was conducted to determine whether the mucus coating the pseudofaeces and faeces of the oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) could stimulate the growth of nine marine microalgae: a Prasinophyceae [Tetraselmis suecica (Butcher)] and eight Diatomophyceae [Amphora sp. Culture of Microalgae with Ultrafiltered Seawater: A Feasibility Study ArchiMer
Cordier, Clémence; Guyomard, Killian; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Sauvade, Patrick; Coelho, Franz; Moulin, Philippe.
The culture of microalgae is important for the production and maintenance of bivalves. One of the major challenges is to maintain the reliability of microalgae forages over the long term. The aim of this work is to use Ultrafiltered (UF) seawater to cultivate them. Thus, cultures in a volume of 300 L of 2 species of microalgae Tetraselmis and T-isochrysis, were monitored in UF water (membrane pore size: 20 nm) and in sea water usually used on the Ifremer mollusk experimental platform of Bouin (France) (Prefiltration, 3 filtrations and 2 UV). The major result is the securing of microlagae cultures with the absence of parasites in all cultures supplied with ultrafiltered water, unlike analyses of the various control cultures. In the case of T-isochrysis, 3...
